A truly great song has a number of unique qualities. It can bring you back to a vivid and specific place in time (perhaps the first time you heard it, or a point in your life when it took on new meanings at an emotional level), it can evoke compelling reactions from the opening notes to the closing bars, and you’re regularly discovering new layers to it on both a sonic and lyrical level. A song this dynamic can lend itself to different occasions as well. It can be a beginning, a middle, or an end, and it can seamlessly find its place on a day-trip mixtape or at the peak of a party, yet its versatility makes it a stronger piece of work overall, rather than a generic one. 2007′s “All My Friends” by LCD Soundsystem meets all of this criteria and more. We’ve turned to this song at the highest of highs, and lowest of lows, and while it always seems to feel right year round, in Spring it takes on its most brilliant form (at least partially due to its original end-of-May release date). True, “All My Friends” is dripping in bittersweet melancholy. The song jumps back and forth between topics like falling in love and falling apart, touches on fleeting moments we take for granted, and hints at a new-found nostalgia for what once seemed like meaningless flings and routine partying. In the end though, James Murphy’s masterful songwriting puts it all in a strangely hopeful perspective. So, heading into the long weekend, where are your friends tonight?
